My OB said What??

I am now 22 weeks!  Over halfway there!  I am doing my best to hold off on the maternity clothes and have managed to elude them thus far. It helps, I think, that I was 12 lbs  down when I started down the road of unavoidable weight gain.
My mom is currently losing weight big time, and she seems to think it would be so hilarious to  be at her smallest when I’m at my biggest… making me weigh more than her!  I think that’s downright evil of her, don’t you?
Alas, at this midway point in my journey, heartburn and other less than desirable things are  now upon me.  :( Boo!  I have had such oh so lovely heartburn with both of my other pregnancies, but I really don’t remember it striking me so early.  I remember my coping strategy with Wade was remaining in an upright robot position after dinner which is sooo not easy to do.  My normal routine (sans heartburn) is to slouch away as squished as possible on the couch for as long as possible.  :)  That and TUMS, of course.  I hadn’t had a Tums since I was pregnant with Wade and found myself popping one already this weekend!

The “story” is that if you do suffer through heartburn then you will be rewarded with a baby sporting a head full of hair. So far that has proved true for both of mine, though the top middle strip of Wade’s fell out shortly after giving him a lovely old man look for a few weeks.  :)

This is a funny site called My OB said WHAT??  It really is shocking some of the things that doctors actually say to their patients.  Patients who are going through the ups and downs of pregnancy and even labor.  I guarantee you will be shocked too. And you will probably laugh more than once.

 Here are some highlights…

  •  “If you think it’s bad on that side of the curtain, you should see what’s on this side.” Doctor to woman who had just vomited during C-section.

  •  “Stop screaming. It’s not that bad and it won’t help anything.” -L&D Nurse to mother in a pitocin induced labor, without pain medication, dilating from 4cm to 10 cm in 45 minutes.

  • “You are so lucky you get to sleep. ” – NICU nurse with a 8 week old to mother who’s baby was in the NICU.
  • “Can we lower the bed some more so she will stop glaring at me like that?” -OB request while a mother, who was very displeased with the actions of the OB was pushing her baby out.
  •  “Beautiful sized baby, 7 pounds 7 ounces.  You could have easily pushed that one out. The rest of the 10 pounds was all your own blubber.” -OB to mother who had a cesarean for a failed induction at 42 weeks, and had been told that an ultrasound at 36 weeks predicted a baby up to 10 pounds.
  • “Mom, just give me a bottle.” Nurse doing an imitation of the baby in special care as a first-time mother was trying to breastfeed amongst the tubes and wires.
  • “I don’t know why you’re so upset, all childbirth is natural.”  -L&D Nurse to mother upset and crying after a cesarean, who had been striving for a non-medicated vaginal birth.
  • “No. Let me tell you what you’re feeling. You’re feeling phantom contractions. It’s all in your head.” -Anesthesiologist to mother who was stating that the epidural was not working well, as they prepared for a cesarean.

Let’s hope I don’t have to hear any of those…  :)
