Monday was Haylee’s first day of school… of real school, that is. She’s been going to the preschool since the 9th, but they were operating on a summer day camp type schedule as opposed to following an academic curriculum.
Last Friday, the 10th, we attended the 4K orientation. The little preschool gym was packed with those 4K-ers and their parental units. The headmaster welcomed everyone with some opening remarks. I found it quite humorous that the chatter level in the gym seemed to go up and up, but the headmaster continued unfailingly on in his speech. :) A four year old attention span is only about a milli-second, you know.
After the welcome, we all separated into the different 4K classes to meet with Haylee’s teacher. I thought it quite smart of her to have laid out a paper for the little ones to color along with several cups of markers to occupy them while she explained things to the parents.
I was “thrilled” to hear her instruction that we must decorate the plain white canvas bag the school was supplying. Yippee! Like I needed one more thing to do that weekend, right? It had already been a long week of teacher orientation and not getting enough of what I needed to get accomplished.
My principal also has a daughter in that class, and she gave me a good tip which I decided to try. I am NOT really inclined to crafty projects like this. I don’t sew (or knit, Rachel!) or even own a glue gun for that matter. A safety pin is my best friend! :)
But Saturday, I headed to good old Walmart to pick up some various things and managed to find some easy, inexpensive decorative accents…. an iron on embellishment, ribbon, and two decorative buttons.
I just cut small slits all around the top to thread the ribbon through, and then had my sis, B, sew the two buttons on. The iron on was fairly easy too, although I did manage to get it on there a bit crooked. :)
I think it turned out well considering the amount of money I spent…about $5, and the level of craftiness ability I possess!
So our little sweet pea headed off for her first day of K4 and is already learning so much. She was rattling off Ps. 139:14 yesterday… “I am fearfully and wonderfully made…”
And…. as an update to my first day of school post… my second day went much smoother as second days usually do. I think the locker craziness will get better each day!
Well, I for one think Haylee’s bag is just “fabulous”! You did a great job and Haylee looks quite pleased with it in the pic. ;) She is so cute! How exciting for her to be in such a neat, rich environment. I am so happy for you all – what an exciting time in your lives. Hope you’re getting some rest! (I know, I know, … I keep saying that… ) ;) Praying for you.
Cute bag! I like how you cut it to put the ribbon on. You gave me an idea!!
YOU, NOT CRAFTY?! What about all your scrapbooks??? =) That takes time and creativity, so you see you are crafty and the bag is really cute. =)

Hey, … Heather has a good point – you make some pretty incredible scrapbook pages! -You’ve got some crafting genes! ;) Plus, you’re a teacher. I don’t care what anyone says, ALL teachers are creative and crafty, etc. :)
I really think the bag looks great… Especially those wonderous buttons! ;)
I just can’t believe Haylee is already in K4!! What in the world!
You did just awesome on that bag. Don’t you want to make one for my kids too. I am just kidding. Somehow Abby got a crafty gene. I guess I must have on way down deep. I am glad all is well. I hope she has a great school year.
