If you haven’t YET tried the amazing French Dip Subs, then I am here to convince you that you HAVE TO try them! :)
They are SO easy… effortless, really… and SO very good! This is a great recipe for company since it is sure to impress, though it does require some last minute steps.
I think the first time I made this was when friends of ours came over for dinner, and I was really hoping for a winner since Kristi is SUCH an awesome cook. I didn’t want her to have to be gagging silently during the meal or anything, you know. Adam, on the other hand… oh wait, I mean, I wanted them BOTH to like it, of course! :)
I was thrilled when EVERYONE raved, and I was inclined to believe they weren’t just trying to make me feel good when I saw that the crockpot was licked clean! Well, I don’t THINK Adam actually LICKED the crockpot, but if he could’ve… he might’ve. Just saying. :)
I also took heed when I heard my husband… son and grandson of great and mighty Southern Cooks I fear I shall never live up to… say these words, “This is SO good. It should be a once a weeker!”
Woot, Woot!
And all that after an effortless meal? I’ll take it!
I got this recipe from Mommy Hates Cooking, who was sharing from Jane Deere Blog, though I made some changes and simplified it {of course!}. I am always ALL ABOUT SIMPLE, peeps!
- Beef Roast {any cut… I usually do Chuck Roast.}
- 1 packet French’s Dry Onion Soup Mix
- Can of Beef Broth
- Shredded or Sliced Mozzarella Cheese {enough to sprinkle on your subs}
- 6 Sub Rolls
You know I prep all my meals ahead of time, so here’s what you do if you’re prepping ahead… Put the Roast, dry onion mix, and can of beef broth in a gallon sized ziploc and squish around to mix. One of the great things about the great and mighty prep ahead plan is that my roast gets to marinade in the fridge until I’m ready to fix it!
At meal prep time, just pour the ziploc into the crockpot and wala! {Don’t forget your crockpot liner! Since I was halving the recipe, I substituted foil for the liner in my smaller crockpot.}
Cook on low for 8 or so hours. The absolutely delish aroma will fill the house and make you ravenous by lunch time!
A few minutes or so before dinner time carefully take your roast out of the crockpot and cool on cutting board for a few minutes. After it has cooled a bit from scalding your fingers, take a fork and knife and shred your beef.
Your scrumptious au jus sauce will be left in the crockpot ready to dish up, though honestly these are good enough to eat without any sauce!
Wala! The yummiest meal you can’t believe was so easy is now ready to be gobbled up!
I forgot to include the au jus sauce in the pic, sorry! But it really is fabulous! :)
If you’re like me and want an easy way to copy and print, here’s the condensed version for you…

I'm so glad you posted this. Every time I pass the roasts in the grocery store, I think about those subs. I have yet to make them, but I definitely will one of these days!!

Okay, just HAD to post again! I paired your recipe with ciabatta bread for my "hen party" Tuesday…every single woman here wanted the recipe!! Absolutely FABULOUS…and will definitely become an easy entertaining staple!!
I made these last night, although I didn't use your recipe. It turned in to your recipe, but I used one from someplace else and basically had to figure it out as I went along because I didn't want to use red wine in my meal. I wish I HAD found this earlier! I would've felt SO much more confident knowing that you'd successfully pulled it off! I'll definitely be saving this link for later when I forget how I did it this time!
