A Day with Dolly

Last Friday was the First Grade Wax Museum at school which meant picking a character from history, dressing up in full costume, and creating a poster displaying pictures and facts about their person.

You know I am a party pooper when it comes to projects.  I am not a seamstress.  Not even close.  Somehow I was going to have to come up with a costume out of thin air.  In all my free time.

I stood gazing at the list of names to sign up for, trying to gauge which one I could get away with using one of her princess dress up dresses.  I went with Dolly Madison because one of things she was known for was her elaborate and fancy dresses. This was after her background as a Quaker, btw.

Well, turns out we were able to borrow a dress from a third grader that worked fabulously, and I found a “mop hat” on ebay for cheap, so we were good to go rather painlessly!

Next up was tackling the poster.  We used scrapbooking paper and the cricut, and I think it turned out pretty well!

The Wax Museum is set up to be as close to a museum as possible.  Each of the first grades classes set up chairs around their rooms, and the students stand or sit next to their poster while parents and family and even the other classes walk through to see.

The morning of the big day, Haylee was pretty excited and very serious about staying as still as she was supposed to.  :) She takes instructions too seriously like her mommy sometimes.

Nana and Pop brought Miller, Gavin, and Riley along to view the Museum with Mommy and Daddy.  Haylee did a great job, and so did everyone else!

Here were some facts about Dolly just in case you care…
  • Dolly Madison was a widow with one child when she married James Madison, who was 17 years older than her.
  • She had a Quaker background but loved to dress in fancy clothes and was known as a charming hostess. Many said without her, her husband would have been a one term president.
  • Dolly Madison was the first woman to serve ice cream at the White House.
  • While her husband was out of town, Dolly is credited with saving a wagonload of priceless treasures from the White House as the British were burning it during the War of 1812.

Glad we survived our Day with Dolly fairly painlessly!
